Thinking Activity :Thaings Fall Apart

Hello readers welcome to my blog

Here this blog is upon Things Fall Apart. This is African literature and genre is novel. This work is written by Salman Chinua Achebe. He is a great African write and he is famously for this And Things Fall apart.

The title Things Fall Apart was adopted from William Butler Yeats’ poem “‘The Second

Coming’” (1921). The poem foresees the end of the present age and the world’s approach to

another phase that is completely different:

Turning and turning in the widening gyre

 The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

 Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed the tide is loosed, and everywhere

 The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

 Are full of passionate intensity.

 Yeats 1921

Things Fall Apart is centered on the life of the protagonist of the novel, Okonkwo. As the

novel develops Okonkwo accidentally kills a man and he and his family are exiled from

Umuofia. During his exile white missionaries arrive in Umuofia and change the village.

When Okonkwo returns to his village he sees the major transformations that Umuofia has

undergone during his exile.

Unhappy with the change, Okonkwo and other villagers come together to drive the white

missionaries out of their land. Their efforts are in vain as the missionaries send their

messengers to abort the meeting. Okonkwo kills one of the messengers and in shock at his

actions the villagers let the other messengers escape. The messengers report back to the

missionaries and they take off to bring Okonkwo to justice only to find him dead.

Historical Context of Things Fall Apart
Things Fall Apart is set in 1890, during the early days of colonialism in Nigeria. Achebe depicts Igbo society in transition, from its first contact with the British colonialists to the growing dominance of British rule over the indigenous people. Literary works about this period often painted stereotypical portraits of native Africans as primitives—even works that were critical of the European colonizers, such as Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad depicted Africans as savages who were both oppressed by and excited the savagery of white Christian Europeans “Joseph Conrad:‘A Bloody Racist'” below. Achebe's novel is a response to these colonialist works of literature,Things Fall Apart is a postcolonial novel that strives to revise previous stereotypes by portraying both cultures with a neutral eye, focusing on the complexity of Igbo traditions.

Things fall apart can be said when something we believed would last forever, comes to an end. The title Things Fall Apart refers to the fact that without proper balance, things do fall apart. The notion of balance in the novel is an important theme throughout the book. Beginning with the excerpt from Yeats' poem, the concept of balance is stressed as important; for without balance, order is lost.

In the novel, there is a system of balance, which the Igbo culture seems but at the end of the novel the society people can not listen the leader, so a chaotic situation is created.

Okonkwo’s Life Falls Apart:

At the beginning of the novel we see Okonkwo as a prosperous leader of the Igbo people. But the novel ends with his tragic end.

Thus, we can say that the novel Things Fall Apart  depicts how Okonkwo’s life falls apart. Okonkwo is definitely a man of importance for his society. He is a well-known person throughout the nine villages and beyond. He is a warrior and wrestler who gains respect through his athletics. He is a fierce-free individual. He hasn’t lost one fight or any battles. And for this the people of the village love him. He is also respected because of his wealth.

Okonkwo's life first begins to fall apart when he kills Ikemefuna, a prisoner who stayed at Okonkwo's home. Okonkwo considers Ikemefuna as one of his own sons. It has been decided from the oracle that Ikemefuna will be killed. Okonkwo takes part in his murder, despite warning from his friend, “That boy calls you father. Do not bear a hand in his death.”  But when he hears Ikemefuna’s crying, ““My father, they have killed me!” as he ran towards him. Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down.”  Okonkwo’s fear of being weak, which is one of his tragic flaws, drives him to rashness, and in the end it contributes to his own tragedy that his own life falls apart.

Igbo Society Falls Apart:

Like Okonkwo his Igbo society also falls apart. In the first part of the book we see a socially, politically and religiously organic Igbo society. But this organic society becomes divided and virtually loses all energy at the end of the book. Thus, the novel documents the falling apart of the Igbo tribe due to its own brutal rules as well as the coming of the Christian missionaries and the rule of the English government.

The Society Itself Responsible For Falling Apart:

At the beginning of the book we see that the Igbo people have a strong faith in their traditional religion. The religion of the Igbos consisted in the belief that there is a suspense God, the creator of the universe and the lesser gods. The supreme God was called Chukwu. The other gods were made by Chukwu to act his messengers so that people could approach him through them. People made sacrifices to the smaller gods, but when the failed, the people turned to Chukwu. Ancestor worship was also an equally important feature of the religion of the Ibo people. There were man superstitious ideas related with their religious belief. They believed in evil spirits and oracle. One of such Oracles is responsible for Okonkwo’s sacrifice of Ikemefuna. This incident underlines the superstitious brutality of traditional Igbo society. We also find the brutality, injustice and the inhuman activities in some other rituals or rules such as – people who are affected by some severe diseases are carried on the Evil Forest to die and they do not get any burial and twain babies are thrown out in the Evil Forest just after their birth. The ultimate result of such brutality is when the people, who are dissatisfied with these rules such as- Nwoye, the mother of three twin babies, get the opportunity to change their religion they do it  and the society ultimately falls apart.

Each and all

Here is my blog on poem Each and all

This poem is about the importance of context, essentially. The narrator, possibly Emerson himself, first states that most people and beings in nature don't think of how other people are perceiving them; the "heifer" in the field doesn't think about who might be listening to it lowing, and the country sexton cares nothing for what Napoleon is doing. However, the speaker suggests that such an attitude is the wrong one—"nothing is fair or good alone."

Next, the narrator recalls finding some beautiful seashells on the shore, but once again, when he brings these home, he finds that they have "left their beauty on the shore." Once removed from their context, he finds that they no longer hold the same charm.

Finally, he describes a pair of lovers. The lady, while still a virgin, seems like a "fairy" to her beloved—until she comes to him as a wife, and he realizes that she is not a supernatural creature but a real person.

Knowing these things, then, the speaker determines that he no longer wants to pursue beauty on its own. Instead, he wants to seek truth. As such, he realizes it isn't possible to pick up beautiful things and remove them from their contexts, as they will then no longer really be beautiful or tell their truth. Instead, he determines to commit himself to enjoying things as they are in the moment, absorbing "the perfect whole."

Ghashiram Kotwal

Ghashiram Kotwal, this play written by Vijay Tendulkar. Vijay Tendulkar was known as one of the very famous Indian playwright.

“Grihasth” was his first play that appeared in 1955, followed by “Silence, Court is in Session!”, Shrimant”, “Sakharam Binder” and “Safar” in 1992. He also scripted for films giving stories of violence, power and repression in different forms in the contemporary Indian society.

Vijay Tendulkar famous for his bitter satirical writing, Ghashiram was one of them. Vijay Tendulkar was very choosy about the words. His each and every word came to represent the reality. Tendulkar’s great strength lies in his dialogues. He indicates every moment and it carries as much narrative force as speech, song and action.

Tughlaq

This play is written by Salman Girish Karnad. He was a kannad  writer. His other famous for like Nag-mandala, hayavadan and first work is  Yayati. Here is his famous work by Tughaqu. It is political sartire. How power did you foolishness which is we can connect in present time.

From the very first scene we come to know about the complex personality of Tughlaq, he can be considered as a learnt and an intelligent man. He has abilities to learn and curiosity to know and he is master in playing chess, he has the knowledge of ‘Quran’more than any sheikh, and also a good reader who has read Greek, farcical and Arabic literature. Tughlaq wanted his life as a garden of roses, where even thrones also give delight; his imagination expresses his sense about literature.

The character of sultan Tughlaq can be compared with Christopher Marlow’s “Dr. Faustus” who has same hunger of knowledge and he had a tragic end and same tragic end Tughlaq has also faced. He wanted to make a new India, and for him it was very difficult but he is ready to explain what people don’t understand,

“How he can explain tomorrow to those,
who have not even opened their eyes
to the light of today.”

But theneven i remember few things like Tughlaq changed capital from Delhi to Daultabad, and from there again to Delhi.
Tughlaq written by Girish Karnad in 1964, is his best loved play, about an idealist 14th-century Sultan of Delhi, Muhammad bin Tughluq, and allegory on the Nehruvian era which started with ambitious idealism and ended up in disillusionment.
Karnad shows the evolution of Tughlaq from an idealist to a tyrant lusty for power and fame, something anyone, any Indian for that matter can relate to easily especially people who are familiar with the Nehruvian Era of Indian politics.

Girish Karnad's play Tughlaq explores the character of one of the most fascinating kings to occupy the throne in Delhi, namely, Mohammed-bin-Tughlaq. He ruled for 26 years, a period of unparalleled cruelty and agonising existence for his subjects.
He's fascinating because though he was one of the most learned monarchs of Delhi, and had great ideas and a grand vision, his reign was also an abject failure. He started his rule with great ideals — of a unified India, of Hindus and Muslims being equal in the eyes of the state (he abolished the onerous tax Jaziya on the Hindus) and the Sultan being the first among equals.
He understood the value of money as not deriving from its intrinsic worth but from the promise behind it: and introduced copper coins. Yet in 20 years his reign had degenerated into an anarchy and his kingdom had become a "kitchen of death". Girish Karnad's play explores why this happened.
The play was immensely popular at the time it was produced (1964). India had, within the same span of nearly 20 years (a mere coincidence?), descended from a state of idealism to disillusionment and cynicism, and hence the play found a chord that resonated in the minds of many people at that time. The issues posed by the play remain relevant even today, not only in a political sense, but also for organisations.
The play recaptures the significant events starting shortly after Tughlaq's ascension to the throne: his proclamations of idealism, his calling upon his people to be a part of the building of a new empire, of prosperity, peace and amity. But he ascended the throne by dubious means, killing his father and brother during prayer time, though no one was sure. This led to a lack of credibility among his followers from the time he ascended the throne — no one believed what he professed. The play outlines his clever plots to eliminate his opponents and his surviving an assassination attempt by his own courtiers. This was a turning point in his life: he decided to shift his capital from Delhi to Daulatabad, ordered every single subject to move from Delhi, banned prayer altogether, and imposed unspeakable cruelties on his subjects. The miseries of the people during the journey, the corruption that was huge and endemic, and Tughlaq's progressive alienation and isolation from his people are dramatically portrayed. The play ends with scenes of utter chaos and misery in the kingdom, and Tughlaq being left alone, having been abandoned by those who survived him, that is.
