Thinking activity :The scarlet letter

 Hello readers,

 

         Welcome to my  blog for  reading. Here is one task which was given by Heena ma'am. So it is a part of activity. In this  blog I should write a story or a poem upon  How other human beings can effect or crest a differ influence in your  life ?so, it will  also effect on you freedom and other psychological effect and creat event, we can use the word   existentialism. So let's see it  .....

Introduction :

 As I say it is all about  our own existence and freedom. How and why  Other can change our life or play an important  roll in our  life it is a big event. We always try to help other andd thought for them so it is like  to live for other  ,being for other. So this is the  Main theme. 

       Here is a story how  we can see the  otherness in our life and our discomfort with that rules or  custum. 

      This story is begun with  College time. A boy  proposed a girl. He loves her the most. He only wants her in his life. He is a nice guy and claver as well. But the girl, denied him when he made proposal. 

Once  she was alone in her room and watching the moon out of window.It's look like she was in deep thinking. After while she go to bed and sleep. She  saw that boy again. He  try to  talk with her. She also wants to talk with him but something is there which stop her to do that. The  boy  came to him and asked her again to  be him and marry with him. This time  the  girl accepts her love and starting to talk with him and spent time with him. Everything is going well. They  are  seat together but suddenly  she see her brother there. She was feeling fear and stand up and she comes to know that  it was a dream. She again into the real world. 

       Passing some time  the boy and girl sting come to  one place but this  time  the boy didn't say anything he just look her and gone. So the girl  feel something wrong or guilt that  he didn't talk with her. Now  she has also feeling of love for that boy but she can not express. 

      Mother and father of the girl they are well educated but narrow minded. So they do not believe in love marriage and this kind of relationship that a bot or  a girl can  choose their life  partner own. The girl knows it very well. 

          After taking the dinner all  went to their room. The  think that  she  should tell her her love about the boy. After that  she will tell her parents but she has not  courage. And she slept.

          Now  they  meet again. That boy  always see her observe her. If she wants any kind of help he always help her. She thought now this is the real time to  express her feeling to him. And she did. They  spent lots of time with  each other.They both think that they  are  so lucky. After passing some time the girl thought that  they should  tell to their parents about the  relationship. 

   

      At night the boy  told  everything to his  parents about the relationship. They  are surprised first they  deny and say it is not possible. Because  his parents know the girls parents and their mentality. But the  boy try and say  that  he can not  live without her. After that his parents say OK. We will talk her  parents. 

   Here when  the family was eating their meal. It was a good time  because all are look happy and calm. So she said about  her relationship and also make the proposal of marriage. Her father frost stop to talk and seems to be like shocked. He  put his spoon in furious. And asked her one by one  question. At that time  the situation became a terrible. Her father  and mother both are started scolding her and  furiously bliam her about her behaviour and talking that decision. So the girl also could not control her self and she became out spoke about the  unfair which happened with her and because of her parents. They deny her to  go anywhere, to  talk with a man or they keep her under the observation. The matter became more serious. Her father slept her and said that now she is not allowed to go anywhere. All family members look her in different way and not seems a sympathy for her. She feels lonely in her room and she closed her room's door and crying. 

 Within a minute the sound of knock she heard and her mother was  front of her and say to  be  ready for college. 

       She went college and this time she decided to  tell him. She got chance and told him everything.They became one.this time  it is not a dream but reality. They both are so happy. Thay have spent lots of time  together.

The Waste Land

 Hello readers welcome.... 

     This is our classroom activity to write something about the the waste land so here task is given to  write first   about the views by Nietzsche and Eliot. View are given upon the mythology which Eliot used in his present poem.Second thing to  write upon Freud and Eliot's views. And last is to give some  glimpse on Indian philosophy or thought which  Eliot taken from Indian thought into poem. So here  is task....for more information you can  click here

Introduction :

            The Waste land  is written by T. S.  Eliot. This poem consist five  part. 

1) The Burial of the Dead.

2) A Game of Chess.

3) The Fire Sermon.

4) Death by Water.

5) What the Thunder Said.

                 Present poem is considered as an Epic. But it is a modern epic.some way  it's characteristics is match with epic but someway so it's modern epic. This poem consist about 434 lines. Eliot also connect myth into this poem. Like Tiresias, God Apollo, Tristan, syble. He also learnt Sanskrit  so he also woven Indian thoughts and Indian philosophy in this poem  which we can Find in Third The Fire sermon  and last part What is the Thunder said as well . He takes  some element from Brihadarnya Upnishad and also from Bhuddha and some myth which is we get  around him.so that's why we can put  this  great poem into category of an epic  but in modern Epic. Eliot  used five language( English, German, French, Italian and Sanskrit)  and three religion( Budhdha,,Hindu and christian) concept in this poem. 

Here I discussed  about the views by Nietzsche and Eliot .second topic or quotation is about  Freud and Eliot. So let's see.... 

(1) What are your views on the following image after reading "The waste land"? Do you think that Eliot is regressive as compared to Nietzsche's views? or has Eliot achieved universality of thought by recalling mytho-historical answer to the contemporary malaise?

 

   From this picture we come to know that  this both have different point of views for the superman ,god myth and so on. So they are stand  opposite side to make arguments.

         We always  heard that  never look back and moving  further. So Friedrich Nietzsche is arguing about that we should go or move  further and find the  solution of the problem with which are comes on our path. So some way  it  is right .

  But when  we see  the Eliot's view we have  some  other view as well  and it will  make  every one to  think upon  which  view is very  much appreciate or can say  right. 

         Eliot is looking back  and gave not  only resolution but also  solution.In his poem The Waste Land he used myth and mythological element. That  way he is regressive and and also  looking  back. 

      So now  time  is that  what we think  on this  view ?  

According to me  time is keep on moving or can say  time cycle is moving eternally. So we always  see and look  further but when we see  some  problem we have some  example from  myth about that mythical character 'S experience. So it will be useful for taking decision. We have not that much life to make every  mistake in our life and find out its solution so we can see back and peep into myth or also in our own life to  make future good enough to take right or which should be done for that. 

        So, it tell to who is right here I like to  say  that  we should use both and try  to  make  our  further life good and find out solution  from to thinking. Nietzsche believe in superman but when  we talk it will be not a good thing.Ex Hitler. While  other side T. S.  Eliot  make balance  of swing, swing of regress and progress. His view is universal into his poem. 

(2) What are your views regarding these comments Is it true that giving free vent to the repressed 'primitive instinct' lead us to happy and satisfied life? or do you agree with Eliot's view that 'salvation of man lies in the preservation of the cultural tradition'?'

It is true that free vent to the repressed ‘primitive instincts’ lead us to happy and satisfied life’ but it will be upon to the person that how is he or she  giving that space to own self. Because it will can be creat a problem or can say anarchy which Arnold used in his essay Culture and Anarchy.  There we can see a chapter about. 'Doing as one  like'.

     According to Eliot  if there is any kind of anarchy will be there we can find it's solution from the  preserve culture or  from tradition as well.    

        So when  we talk about  free vent it is depends on person that  he will not  misuse of it otherwise it will create chaos. As Eliot say that  we can peep into back, into  preserve culture it will help and balanced the  thing. 

(3) Write about allusions to the Indian thoughts in 'The Waste Land'. (Where, How and Why are the Indian thoughts referred?)

     ' The Waste land'   Eliot used  Indian philosophy as well in this poem. In the third part  we can find the Buddhism and in  the last  part we can see the  some elements from  the  Upnishad.

Eliot uses the three “Da” taken from “Brihadaranyaka Upanishad".

1.)     Datta – giver

         It means to give  other 

2.)     Dayadhvam – compassion

         It means to  be symaptis or feel others sorrow and give support. Poet  give the metaphor of key ,lock prison and nightfall. 

         

3.)     Damyata – self-control

           It means to control our own self .here metaphor is  Boat, sail sea and oar.

     Eliot used some  metaphor to  give it's understanding.

  

Here in this  Mantra we can see  the meaning is universal and when  we compare the poem it is also universal.there is three words Da, Da, Da, and here  word is Shantih...  This mantra and the last part of the last  part of the poem  it is giving solution ,which are universal. 

          Some way  we can say Eliot draw the sketch of myth and compare it with the modern time. During his time people became a Robert or we can say punctual but that way, like Robert. He also put his on personal experiences and he worked at bank so he should report on 9 o'clock. 

  

      A dead sound on the final stroke of nine... 

     One reason he found the peace and spiritual context in myth. In such time  human being want that spirituality so he connect that dotes here in poem. The Modern time also time of wars which is not a bearable and kind of chaos and all the things which might not be given  people peace. 

Conclusion  :

       As above we can give the argument and also  see  the Indian Thought and philosophy into the poem  by  T. S. Eliot. The waste land and we can see the  spiritual context in this poem and also  we come  to  know that why this poem  have  some  myth element and the univarsalaty.  According to me the poet  used the myth and the religious aspect into poem because of he wants to say that modern time  or  also we can say post modern time  we can not find that  peace and morality. And also we can give a opinion that because there is not peace and all the things which can satisfied people and gave calmness so he try to tell us that  see  our tradition and culture. Go through it and moving  further to make  our  life  better. It will help you. So his all mythical aspect from this poem, they make it a modern epic.....

General Characteristics of 20th century literature

   In this blog  I'm going discuss about general characteristics of 20th century  or modern age literature.It is part of my  study task and activity. 

 

  Introduction : -

                   As we know  there are many periods in English literature,like Elizabethan age which is considered as a golden age. After that Puritan age, Restoration age, Neo-classical age Romantic and Victorian age. Modern age is coming after the Victorian era. There are some changes which people don't like in Victorian period. So that's why  we can see  different ages in English literature which we can  also find in other literature like  Gujarati. So let's see some  characteristics of the Modern Age.

Let's first what is the Modernism ...?

     

        The early decade of the 20th century, we can say  period of World War 1is known as Modern age. Before it there was a Victorian era. So in this time, time of modernism such thing were taken changes they  breck to write in traditional way and write in new way. But as reality coin has two side so we can see bad or negative side as well as Positive side.

Ezra Pound: "Make it new."

    Here some characteristics :-

 

      Use of language in different way 

 

Realism 

 Nothingness

 Fragmantation

 Effect of World War 

 Industrialisation 

 Radio -T. V. 

 

    Stream of consciousness (in literature) Science andInnovation Passism No Blind Faith(Freedom in religion)  Isolation/Brokenness Spiritual degradation and sexual perversion Art for Life's Sake.

              

   In the first characteristics which is given here that use of language in different way. We can see  some  changes in writing. The beginning and the ending of work. We can see the realism and in 20th century is marked with a note of it. Realism in modern poetry was the product of a reaction against the pseudo -romanticism of the last century over and above the influence of science. 

        

        We can see that during this modern time people suffering from anxiety and frustration development of Science and rational thinking had shaken mens faith and belief towards religion there are some freedom from religion there were competition atmosphere because of the industrialism and Technical progress of people felt frustration and mentally sickness.

    

  Barnard Shaw : "Old superstition of religion and the new superstition of the science."

           The second decades of the 20th century time of World War first there may be seeds short before that after that we see the depression and many reason for that.These 2 world war made changes there were not employment so the citizens and people were very depressed and frustrated how to get in a food and all their basic needs we can find the examples for that up into the movie by Charlie Chaplin's the Modern Times.

             

    During this  era because of technical development and science progress there  were happened invention of Radio, Television and Cinema. So now people have a tools for entertainment. 

                          In the 20th century writer Wrote about the poor and working class people. So now interest was increased towards them not upon rich or middle class  but yes it is obvious that we found some glimpse upon the discrimination of  rich and lower classy. Dickens wrote Oliver Twist we can take it as examples of that. During this time people became conscious and try for new and also ready for new things and for efforts.

               

    Because of industrialisation there were people who had no employment. It is a huge problem for all. So it will effect on economical condition as well as social. So it's impact also on literature. Machine takes the place of human so human have not get that value and also money as reward of their work. 

              

       People believe that Art is life sake. The  writer focus on the problem occursed in that time. So that's the reason that modern literature is full of realism. There are painting which are also different than earlier age or time. Mostly we found that 20th century or Modern ear is vice versa of Victorian age. That  period was a reason born of the new one. New criticism and new  Histoeism aslo takes the place. 

                 

      There were  some  group which were working for art or can say  literary work. Like Fabian society, Bloomsbury group. In this group Bloomsbury Virgina Woolf, Jamce Joyce, T.S. Eliot, Pound and other. They  also  include the stream of consciousness in thier  work ex of The light house by Virginia Woolf.

Conclusion : -

         

       Every new beginning is start with something  with new and something bad. 20th century seen many  bad incidents. Like  two  world wars and Nazism, fascism and many  other. So  here is also new beginning of new challenges and new value. New art and literature, or also intellectuality was there in era.

Thinking Activity: Identify Modern images ,Methaphors - Short Modern Poem

 

Hello, Readers welcome to  my  blog.... 

           Here ,in this blog I wrote about the  short poem.I should  find out the images and metaphor from  given poems and give the reason why and what is the reason we called it Modern Poems. It is  a task given by Dr. Barad sir. For more information you can go through one click here.

               Here we will see  the poems and so we should know about some  characteristics of Modern poem  and about this era. We can see different theme in poems like; theme on telephones ,trains and common place. During this time so many invention was taken the place. We can also say Realism as a one of the characteristic.Love is another one. We can find theme of love in poem ex. Robert Bridges has produced  love  sonnet. Then  Nature, religion ,Romantic elements, pessimism and other also. Here we can not forget a great poet of this era T. S. Eliot. He wrote the poem The waste land. It is his famous poem which is divided into five parts.

   

                      Modern literature is difficult to define and also get the meaning. We also  find in novel  that  no beginning and no end. It is a different writhing from  the Victorian time. In Victorian Robert browning was a writer or poet that critic  say about him  You can not him  after dinner,but when  you are ready to  think a lot  that  time  you able to  read him. So here  in modern poetry also  like  that we can find so many interpretation in that. 

(1) 'The Embankment'- T.E.Hulme

Once, in finesse of fiddles found I ecstasy, 

 flash of gold heels on the hard pavement. 

Now see I 

That warmth’s the very stuff of poesy. 

Oh, God, make small 

The old star-eaten blanket of the sky, 

That I may fold it round me and in comfort lie.

                 This poem is about those who has not basic need like food and shelter. Embankment is a well known area in London there people sleeping rough. He has no house or shelter. We can see some  word like  Gold, old cold, and fold in this poem. We can say that it is about past. In past the man had worth and every thing but now ruined. So he prayed to god to give him some warms. Fineness fiddles  is metaphor for past. In the past In this poem we can see the words which are start with letter 'f ' like; Fallen, finesse of fiddle,Found the flash. This is like a musical quality in this poem. 

(2)Darkness- by Joseph Campbell

I stop to watch a star shine in the boghole –

A star no longer, but a silver ribbon of light.

I look at it, and pass on.

Darkness is a itself  something like  negative. But when we talk about it there is another side also of positive one. So when one is in darkness but there is a boghole which give you a hope. When you look at there side you think it is star of darkness but when  we come near it we come to know that it is a silver ribbon which is  shining and give  light us and a kind of motivation to bring out self from darkness. Metaphors is star is about hope and also boghole we can say  metaphors of opportunity.

(3) Image -  Edward Storer

"Forsaken lovers,

Burning to a chaste white moon

upon strange pyres of loneliness and drought".

 

         This one  more short poem which consist only  three lines. So first line is 'Forsaken lover ' means  a lover was abondadon. He or she can not be together. So now lover fill is loneliness. White  moon  is symbol of love. As we know that they taking about its shine  and beauty. Now he he is burning about that kind of memory. And poet say that loneliness is pyres. So thats burn the lover. 

(4) In the station of metro - Ezra pound 

The apparition of these faces in the crowd;

Petals on wet, black bough.

               This the poem of Two lines. First when  we see this frist line the word apparition means a ghost but people In modern time they  work like machine or we can say  mechanism. They have no time. They all are in crowd but even though they are alone. No one is think for other. So petal is here metaphor for  people or can say for  crowd and bough but it black means  like dead without life. People are working like live dead body so we can connect it here. 

(5)The pool- by Hilda Dolittle

"Are you alive?

I touched you

you quiver trembling like a sea fish

I cover you with my net

What are you banded one?

Are you alive?  This is the starting line. So when  we talk about modern time  people are living busy life. So here the  title of poem 'Pool'  we know that  there is a water but  it is not in motion or flowing like  river. So it has limitation. People were trembling when they are controlled by power. They  have  no individuality.They are like  a fish which is in net of fisherman. 

(6) "Insouciance"- By Richard Aldington

"In and out of the dreary trenches

Trudging cheerily under the stars

I make for myself little poems

Delicate as a flock of dovesin 

Thy fly away like white-winged Doves.

               In this poem everyone has own interpretation and can find many images.  'Dreary trenches' is used as a metaphor for the ups and downs of life. Poet looks at the ups and downs of life and specially downfall of the humanity during the war. He is not willing to live in the atmosphere around him but he HAS to. Thus he becomes a small poem which shows the so-called brightness and his aggressiveness to be free from this hypocrite society.

(7)"Morning at the window"- T.S.Eliot

They are rattling breakfast plates in basement kitchens, 

And along the trampled edges of the street 

I am aware of the damp souls of housemaids 

Sprouting despondently at area gates. 

The brown waves of fog toss up to me       

Twisted faces from the bottom of the street, 

And tear from a passer-by with muddy skirts 

An aimless smile that hovers in the air 

And vanishes along the level of the roofs.

             The poem has many symbols and metaphors as like  rattling means vibreting its suggests the modern style of  living life which we can see different than Romantics,They were given  clear images by their poem while here poet give difficult  images  which we have to think deeply. we see the life of poor people  by these images that how they live their whole day like 'sprouting despondently at area gates', 'Damp souls' , hopeless who have no any aim in life, 'fog' is very important image in which we can't see anything clearly same people can't see that what their aim of living life, other images like ' muddy skirt', 'aimless smile' give that spirit of nothingness of life of people.

(8) “The Red Wheelbarrow” by William Carlos Williams

so much depends

upon

a red wheel

barrow

glazed with rain

water

beside the white

chickens.

                 When we talk about the read borrow we can see it in given  picture and it is about a rural area. But  further poem consist line about beside chickens so they obviously say about the  nature and farm. Because as we know that  farming is very important. Or may be the   wheel is metaphors of motion. 

(9) “Anecdote to the Jar” by Wallace Stevens

I placed a jar in Tennessee,

And round it was, upon a hill.

It made the slovenly wilderness

Surround that hill.

The wilderness rose up to it,

And sprawled around, no longer wild.   

The jar was round upon the ground   

And tall and of a port in air.

It took dominion everywhere.   

The jar was gray and bare.

It did not give of bird or bush,   

Like nothing else in Tennessee.

         This is a short poem by stevens. It is wonderful one. Poem telling about the past. Here poet takes Jar ,we can refer it with the poem Grecian Urn by Keats.Here jar is metaphor of Imagination ,culture, creativity or we can say Art. But this symbol of art means Jar is on hill. Now hill is symbol of nature. Nature means reality. So here quetion is which one is superior Art or nature. If anyone has art and creativity it s good but as Plato said it is imitation.so it has some limit.  So first we think poet argue about that  creativity or art is powerful. But  poem take  turn and we come to  know that nature is reality and  imagination is not able of what nature is. 

(10) “I" by E.E Cummings

"A leaf  falls with loneliness"

                 Here  we can  see that only one  line of poem. So as we can see  above poems they all are consist at least more than one line. Herethe title of poem is 'I' means about self. Leaf is a metaphor in this poem. And when we talk about the images we can say  it is about the 'loneliness'.Different reader has different interpretations upon this poem. When we talk about  leaf and loneliness it is related with 'fall'or unfortune.

Conculsion:

            We  know  that  there are many poetry era in English literature. They all have their own way to write ,describe and choosing the word is very  important. When  and where which word will give a apt meaning it is very hard to find. Through this  literary work we came  to know about the  modern era and poet  wrote  a shot poem. One line poem from with many lines. So here  I try to interpret some  short modern poems.

Study frames of Charlie Chaplin's Films The Modern Times and The Great Dictator

 Hello Readers, welcome to my blog...

               There  are so many  films by Charlie Chaplin.Here my task to study frames from this both movies.Charlie Chaplin is a comedian but he is not just a comedian. Through his  films we can learn many things about the 20th century or we can say we come to know about his time. In this  both films I got many think that simply it looks like comedy but it is not so,but when we go deep then  we know about the reality. So let's discuss about this both movie... I know  movie is for watching but also we can study it and discuss upon it.

      

The Modern Times

     This is the movie which released in 1936.Its American silent movie.In beginning we can  see the industrialisation effect. So many sheep are  going and after that  many people are going like sheep. We can find  many frams like this. I have  made presentation on that so it will help you to  understand it. Charlie chaplin's the modern times

The Great Dictator 

           This is the one of the greatest movie by Charlie Chaplin. He  made hundred and more than  silent movie and he got successe.This movie is not silent but with script and dialogues. Charlie used many  reality situation we can say  socially and politically both way. 

       We can see the fram of work war and soldiers were fighting for nation.Jew barbar also was there but because the plan crash he lost his memory or we can say an  Amnesia. In this movie Charlie is in double roll. One  is Barabar who is Jew. And other character is of dictator. We can  see  that Dictator doing copy of Hitler. We can take example of his speech. When he is giving the speech he try to imitate to Hitler. Everyone is cheering for him during his speech he raise his hand to stop them.. So it is  a power. One  side you talk about them and other side you also take them under your hand in a second. 

        Dictator want be at a top. He does not like that  other man  can come and he  will take his place and be more powerful.He also has fond of making his own picture and statue, so there are two artists are working on that but but, when that dictator wants. 

                This is the great speech by Charlie in this movie. That  everyone has Right of freedom. Humanity is important than power, here I'm  talking about which  power through one can harm other not do good  things. Here this speech is apply on t all human beings .

Teacher's Day celebration

              

Hello Everyone.....

        We celebrated  Teacher's Day virtually.In This current situation of Corona  we are not  able to  celebrate this Teacher's Day in class or our institute so we got new way  to celebrate it and we learnt so many things regarding preparation for unit or on particular topic. I learnt also  about some  technical things and how to  mange them. 

I want to  say  about  my  experience regarding this  that what  we should do for this day ?First of all  I should choose my topic and prepared a video on that with  Power point presentation. PPT is not that much compulsory but  I thought everyone has not  have information so I prepared it. 

After that  we should  made  a quiz on  that and also Auto generated Certificate for those who will  appear in quiz. So I think this  was a little bit  tough for me  but  I  learnt it and I succeed.

I would  like to say  that  Teaching is not just a Job  but  it is Responsibility.

ELT-1 on Bilingualism, Trilingualism and Multilingualism.

 

Hello everyone.,

    Here you can  see hello  in many languages like English , French ,Hindi and many more so,     This is  blog on our paper  ELT -1.  In this  paper  we learn about the English as a second language. Now  English became global language.

    Here is my  task upon  to  define  the these three word with examples. So let's see  that  three  word .when  we want  to  communicate  with  someone  and convey  our message to other  language is the medium for that. Sometime when  you know  language more than  one  or to  or even  multi language  it will became to  easy  to  communicate. So, it is very  interesting  to  know  the different  words .  

1) Bilingualism  

  Bilingualism means  ability to  speak or use any two languages.. 

2) Trilingualism 

      Trilingualism  means ability to  speak or use any three languages.. 

3) Multilingualism

   Multilingualism  means ability to speak or use more than three languages...

 In Gujarati language we say  : સ્વાગત છે

 In Hindi language  we say  :  स्वागत हे

         We can say that  into  bilingualism  one language  will  be our own  native  language  and second  will  be any  other.

        When we praise  some girl  we say  you are beautiful  so let's  see what  called it in other languages... 

 English :you are beautiful 

 Dutch :  jij bent mooi

 Arabic : ant jamila

 

    It is very interesting  to find this  kind of words  in different languages....Right..? So now let's see  Multilingualism... 

Multilingualism:

     When  we see some happy we see the  smile  and whenever we click the picture  at that time  we use the word  smile  please... So let's see  how it in other languages...
