Hello viewers,
Welcome to my blog. We all know about the theory of structuralism and deconstruction. Deconstruction is the theory which is given by Derrida and work upon it. We can apply this theory on poem perosetand in film as well. But here my concern with the task in the sonnet by Shakespeare. Here my work upon deconstructive reading of poem. This task is given by Dr. Dilip Barad sir. He discussed about the deconstructive reading sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare. If you want more information Click here.
As we know that poem is not as simple as to understand and get the meaning. There are many meanings beyond the lines. So here first we will see what is deconstructive reading of poem.
Deconstructive Reading of Poem
Jacques Derrida - explained as a strategy
" Rules for reading, interpretation and writing".
"There is in deconstruction, a self-explanatory figure [autoaffection] which imposes its necessity in accumulating the forces trying to repress it [autoimmunity]”
“If I had to risk a single definition of deconstruction, I would say without words,” more than one language ”
These is the quotes by Derrida on deconstruction.
Rene Descartes and Fredrick Nietzsche were pioneer in deconstruction. They began to question the objective truth of language. This is a known as past structuralist, this criticism came after structuralism. Derrida constructive idea;
Free play
Undecideble of meaning
Binary opposition.
Interplay about Hegemony and subjectivity.
Deconstruction is an approach to understanding the relationship between text and meaning. But also he talked about free play of meaning and undecidability. There is also a concept of decentering the center. That is to say that according to Derrida there is no presence or truth apart from a language. There is no reality other than textuality. In Deconstruction we find that one of the important things is Binary opposition. We can come to the real meaning. Words give the meaning it will be our central meaning of the poem but in deconstructive reading we come to the uncentral meaning of poem.
Sonnet 18: Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date;
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature’s changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st;
Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
In the very first line poet want to camper his beloved with summer means nature.He want praise her into lines and in his written poem.
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
He said that her beauty shall not be fade in summer. Her beauty shall remain as it is. And so he wrote her in lines and try to say that I want make her immortal. So here we can see the power and as we see in the video about hegemony. That Poet has a power that he can make his beloved immortal other wise she has no any existing without him. She is depends on him to be immortal. But we also know that poet want to make not the beloved want to b immortal because of him. This is may be I can't say that the another side of poem which will side of beloved that is she really wants to be immortal like this? That power can manage her.
Into deconstructive reading we got the new meaning of poem. When we read the poem and other think that this is the meaning which we got in first reading but every time it is not so. Here in given link we can see the sonnet by Shakespeare, we think that poet or lover want to make her beloved immortal for forever but at the end we get the point that it all about celebrating self of poet or lover not beloved or not nature.
