The purpose by T. P. Kailasam

Hello friends,

In the field of literature we have many form of art like, Play, Novel, Poem Essay ,Short stories, novella and Drama etc. Especially in Indian writing we find many well known dramatist who wrote  very beautiful drama we know the well-known writer like Tagore, T.P. Kailasam, Aurobindo etc. Here my purpose to talk on The Purpose by T. p. kailasam. Here is my work upon 'The purpose',task given by Vaidahi ma'am.

T. P. Kailasam :

T.P.Kailasam was born on 29 July 1886 in in Mysore India and died on 1946 in Bangalore his full name is Thanjavur Param Shiva Kailasam his work like,

1)  The Burden
2) Fulfilment
3) The Purpose
4) Keechak
5) Karna:The Brahmin's curse

He wrote in English also. He was considered as the "Father of modern Kannada drama" and also a famous as the "Father of humorous plays". we can see the theme of his work are mythological and also characters are taken from myth.

1.) Compare and Contrast Arjun and Eklavya's Character.
The purpose by TP Kailasam its characters and theme is from Mahabharata there are three major characters:-
Drona :guruji
      Arjun: Kshatriya
          Eklavya:Nishad boy

Arjuna is the Aryaputra and pupil of Drona. Eklvya is  the Nishad son. Arjuna is not nicest person in this play because here he thought about himself and about that he is belong to upper cast and he insulted Eklvya to called him Nishad and lower cast. They both have different purpose.
Arjuna is learning  archery from his guru Drona. He want to be greatest archery man of the world. While  Eklvya want to  learn to save the deer. His purpose is nice than Arjuna. We can say that Arjuna has  a silly pride and he prodigal. On other hand Eklavya is a very gentle and nice guy his intention to  learn archery also nice. But Arjuna insult him and that we can see in their conversation :

Arjuna: (Stung to the quick) What do you mean by my "Silly pride" in my caste?

Ekalavya: (Calm and smiling) "What do I mean"? Why, just what I said! When I spoke of your pride in your caste as being silly, I meant that you are proud of your caste without knowing what there is in your caste to be really proud of!

Arjuna: (Sneeringly) How do you know that I do not know it?

Ekalavya: Well then, if you really do know what there is to be proud of in being an Arya that there is not in being a nishaada... tell me!...I am a nishaada and you are an Arya; And yet I am as strong as you; I can become as great an archer as you ever can – if your Guru wills it; and I have all that I want in my beautiful forest as you have all you want in this big city of yours!...Tell me how you are any better than I for being an Arya ?

Arjuna: (Cogitates for a minute; a confused and unequal to a coherent and cogent reply, snaps back sardonically) You may be all this and even perhaps become as good as I in archery – if Gurujee takes you on as his pupil! And yet, after all is said and done... AN ARYA is AN ARYA! And a NISHAADA is only a LOW-BORN NISHAADA!

Ekalavya: (Bursts out laughing) You make me laugh!

Arjuna: (Curtly) What is there to laugh at?

Ekalavya: I am laughing because it seems to me that according to you the only thing that one has to be proud of in being an Arya is THAT ONE IS NOT A NISHAADA! If then, there were no nishaadas at all in this world... you poor Aryans would have nothing to be proud of in being born as Aryas?

Arjuna: Is that what you really think?

Ekalavya: Of course not! I know what there is to be proud of in being an Arya! It is you that do not! If you care to hear me and learn I shall tell you! In the forest I live in, cruel wolves maul and kill harmless deer and fawns; and THE ONLY WAY THAT I CAN SAVE THE DEER AND FAWNS IS BY KILLING THE WOLVES! In the forest next to mine lives an Aryan Rishi and HE PROTECTS HIS DEER AND FAWNS BY THE POWER OF HIS "TAPAS" WITHOUT KILLING THE WOLVES! Now MY way of guarding my deer and fawns spells not only the death of the wolves, but also makes little wolf-cubs who have as yet done no harm, become fatherless and motherless!! And I who know both the loss of a father and love of a mother can feel for the poor little cubs! Thus, you see, that the power an Arya has, of doing the same thing as a nishaada BUT WITHOUT HARM OR HURT TO ANYONE, is a thing to be really proud of! YOUR silly pride in your caste ONLY BECAUSE YOU WERE BORN AN ARYA is but a sure sign of your WEAK HEAD!

2.) What is Subaltern? Who do you think is the Subaltern in this play? Explain with examples.

The subaltern is the term means 'subordinate or secondary'.
The term 'subaltern' is used in post colonial theory. The exact meaning of the term in current philosophical and critical usage is disputed.

Subaltern is the theory which may we can see everywhere. Some how person apply it on ownself and became victim and voiceless. In the novel  we can see this subaltern,A fine Balance.

Even in The Kanthanpura we can see the situation of women and also the cast decremintion also we can say the permanent theory of subaltern here.

* Subaltern in The purpose:=

It is believed that Arjun The Prince has right to learn archery. He has purpose, believes that Eklavya the Nishadha is a poor boy who can't even give the Gurudakshina he has no right to learn archery. It is aimless Eklavya by learning occur across Arjuna wrong in the Mahabharata the character of Eklavya is voiceless marginalized we not know about him more but T.P. Kailasam Eklavya is Revolutionary is rising voice against the hierarchy. He gave the voice to the Nishadha boy.

Subaltern is a a position without identity Eklavya want to make his own identity you want to become a greatest Aakar and it can be interpreted as a subaltern desire to build his own identity his own place in the society he is far ahead in our country in comparison to Arjuna buttock love you have to sacrifice his kill his knowledge for archna by giving his term as a Gurudakshina once again social evils of society played the role and Eklavya approved is the richest of the earth.

The subaltern in this purpose Eklavya is a soviet and was offered because of class caste and resource subaltern are never given their turn to speak and if they raise their voice for their right they are always suppressed by the dominant culture.

This how the power always suked poor and weak. Here in The purpose  cast  and race. Who one belongs to higher class and cast they want to ruin on the poor and weak who belongs to lower class. Kailsam portrayed character of both boys differ than Mahabharata. Here  he gave to chance to Eklvya to speak  and defend to the Arjuna. And he did by giving his thump as Gurudakshina.

3.)Write your views about Education system in India with reference to Past and Present time.

In  the society there is a cast system and  class system. So who deserves something to get in a real sense that gain nothing but pain.Education is one of the field we can see this kind of partiality. Movie is one medium to show this we have many movies like Super 30,

        " कोन तोडेगा ये परंपरा? द्रौणाचार्य तो हमेशा राजा के ही साथ थे और आगे भी रहेंगे।एकलव्य का अगुंठा कटवाते रहेंगे  और अर्जुन को बडा योद्धा कहेलवाते रहेंगे ।"

In a past time who belongs to Brahmin or Kshatriya they can learn all kind of vidhya. Who are not belongs the upper class they have no right to learn. Other exam of we can say the 'Karna' another character from Mahabharata. Kailasam wrote upon him also.

Nowadays  who have a money they have right to get education. Here I used the word like  Vidhya and education that also make the past time differ than present time.

4.)Is Dronacharya an ideal teacher? If yes, then how? and If No, then Why? Explain with examples.

Dronachary is an ideal teacher because he didn't say no to Eklavya in The purpose to teach him even he was glad to know the intention to learn archery from him. Here some dialogue from play :

Ekalavya: ("Serving out” his words slowly and deliberately in a tone of utmost apprehension) IF you HAD HAD the time, Sir, and WERE FREE to teach me, Sir, WOULD YOU HAVE LIKED, the least bit, LIKED to teach me?

Drona: (With his hands resting on Ekalavya's shoulders; bends down and speaks in a tone of utmost love and admiration) "Liked"? "The least bit liked"? Why, my little man, if only I had the least chance, I should LOVE to teach you!

But unfortunately Dronacharya can't teach the Eklvya.here I like give the example from movie Super 30.

"राजा कौन बनेगा  वो जो राजा के घर में  पैदा हुआ और वो जो राजा बननेका हकदार है ?"

5.)Write something about your experience like Eklavya or Arjuna with any teacher during your study phase till now. (Not necessary to mention any name)

In my primary  school time there are some teachers who always focus on some student who  are clever or related in family or another relation.here I'm not talking about me only but with other also happened that, that I observed. I also face this kind of partiality during study time.one teacher who always  gave attention to who are clever and in their relation evan he felt envy because of my achievement.so yes I fased this kind of partiality.
