Hello readers welcome to my blog
Today I have one more blog to read which is on very interesting novel, The White Tiger. It is a part of my classroom activity which is assigned by Dr. Dilip Barad sir. Here are the points...to write on that.
1. How far do you agree with the India represented in the novel The White Tiger?
I agree with that in the novel and movie also we can see the representation of India. First it is the journey about Balram who is lined in small village named Laxamngarth.
In this village we can not find any decent school which situation we can find still in present in India. Other things is health centre are not available or if available then not every necessary things will be there for patients.
Then the capital Delhi. It is the capital of India but corruption and politics which we can see in movie and read in novel.
Now when we are taking about India how we can forget the cast system and discrimination of Rich and Poor. Ya it is harsh reality that no one will accept they are lower or upper.... If they will became rich they will forgot the situation when they were poor and helpless.
2. Do you believe that Balram's story is the archetype of all stories of 'rags to riches'?
We can say that not every story of poor is same who became rich or successful. Some became because of their hard work and never cut others line ,doing corruption or bad politics. In this novel we can say Balram used સામ, દામ, દંડ, ભેદ to became successful and he stolen the thought of Ashok. He got the idea to be entrepreneur.
According to common archetypal pattern all poor boy's life turns out into rich. Same is the case with Balram Halwai who grows in a very poor family. He left his schooling and started working in a tea stall. Then he learns driving and becomes driver of rich entrepreneur Ashok Sharma. His dreams are big therefore he decided to kill Mr. Ashok to get his place. After killing his master he steals his identity and become same rich entrepreneur. In many other stories like 'Slumdog Millionaire', 'Boss', 'Once upon a time in Mumbai', Raees' we can find the common archetype of rags to riches where the protagonist begins from poor class turned into Rich in the end or between of the film.
3. "Language bears within itself the necessity of its own critique, deconstructive criticism aims to show that any text inevitably undermines its own claims to have a determinate meaning, and licences the reader to produce his own meanings out of it by an activity of semantic 'freeplay' (Derrida, 1978, in Lodge, 1988, p. 108). Is it possible to do deconstructive reading of The White Tiger? How?
Yes it is possible to read the novel with deconstruction theory. When while reading a reader starts questioning the very practice of being successful entrepreneur, (like Balram who became succsseful entrepreneur), we can question Balram's did. In this novel Balram used many satirically words and sentences. For politics and authority or government. Country like India there, religion is a powerful pillar.
Through the Character of Balram Arvind Adiga also attack on religion as well. Which we can find in the school incident. He also satire Hangman, Bhudhdha.
4. With ref to screening of the Netflix adaptation:
(i) write review of the film adaptation of The White Tiger...
The movie is also faithful to the novel. Yes directer made some changes but because of some time we can not show or present some events.
(ii) Have you identified any difference in the novel and the adaptation? Does it make any significant difference in the overall tone and texture of the novel?
There are some differences between movie and novel the white Tiger.
* In the novel pinky madam play badminton with the driver. But in movie when Aashok plying tennis alone and Balram collect the ball.
* These poetic lines bring major changes in both the movie and in the book. In movie, Pinky madam who speaks these lines when she goes to America and in books Bookseller who speaks these lines when Balram Halwai visits the book store and it changes entire life of Balram Halwai from Yokel to rich and successful entrepreneur.
* Minor change also like the lines of email last which he send to Mr. Jiabao
*Accident scene is also different then novel.
(iii) David Ehrlich in his review write this - Ramin Bahrani’s Netflix Thriller Is a Brutal Corrective to ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Why is it a 'corrective'? What was the error in Slumdog Millionaire that it is corrected?
The movie slumdog Millionaire is a famous and appreciated by people. While the novel is also marvellous work by Amiga who portrait the real image India. India in which we can see corruption, bad politics.
In the both end are different. Means both Balram and Hamid both became successful but There is difference.
Balram became successful to kill his master Ashok and the telant to observe. So he made effort for that.
In movie Slumdog Millionaire Hamid became rich giving the right answer in the show.
So this is the corrected by the The White Tiger do.
