Here ,in this blog I wrote about the short poem.I should find out the images and metaphor from given poems and give the reason why and what is the reason we called it Modern Poems. It is a task given by Dr. Barad sir. For more information you can go through one click here.
Here we will see the poems and so we should know about some characteristics of Modern poem and about this era. We can see different theme in poems like; theme on telephones ,trains and common place. During this time so many invention was taken the place. We can also say Realism as a one of the characteristic.Love is another one. We can find theme of love in poem ex. Robert Bridges has produced love sonnet. Then Nature, religion ,Romantic elements, pessimism and other also. Here we can not forget a great poet of this era T. S. Eliot. He wrote the poem The waste land. It is his famous poem which is divided into five parts.
Modern literature is difficult to define and also get the meaning. We also find in novel that no beginning and no end. It is a different writhing from the Victorian time. In Victorian Robert browning was a writer or poet that critic say about him You can not him after dinner,but when you are ready to think a lot that time you able to read him. So here in modern poetry also like that we can find so many interpretation in that.
(1) 'The Embankment'- T.E.Hulme
Once, in finesse of fiddles found I ecstasy,
flash of gold heels on the hard pavement.
Now see I
That warmth’s the very stuff of poesy.
Oh, God, make small
The old star-eaten blanket of the sky,
That I may fold it round me and in comfort lie.
This poem is about those who has not basic need like food and shelter. Embankment is a well known area in London there people sleeping rough. He has no house or shelter. We can see some word like Gold, old cold, and fold in this poem. We can say that it is about past. In past the man had worth and every thing but now ruined. So he prayed to god to give him some warms. Fineness fiddles is metaphor for past. In the past In this poem we can see the words which are start with letter 'f ' like; Fallen, finesse of fiddle,Found the flash. This is like a musical quality in this poem.
(2)Darkness- by Joseph Campbell
I stop to watch a star shine in the boghole –
A star no longer, but a silver ribbon of light.
I look at it, and pass on.
Darkness is a itself something like negative. But when we talk about it there is another side also of positive one. So when one is in darkness but there is a boghole which give you a hope. When you look at there side you think it is star of darkness but when we come near it we come to know that it is a silver ribbon which is shining and give light us and a kind of motivation to bring out self from darkness. Metaphors is star is about hope and also boghole we can say metaphors of opportunity.
(3) Image - Edward Storer
"Forsaken lovers,
Burning to a chaste white moon
upon strange pyres of loneliness and drought".
This one more short poem which consist only three lines. So first line is 'Forsaken lover ' means a lover was abondadon. He or she can not be together. So now lover fill is loneliness. White moon is symbol of love. As we know that they taking about its shine and beauty. Now he he is burning about that kind of memory. And poet say that loneliness is pyres. So thats burn the lover.
(4) In the station of metro - Ezra pound
The apparition of these faces in the crowd;
Petals on wet, black bough.
This the poem of Two lines. First when we see this frist line the word apparition means a ghost but people In modern time they work like machine or we can say mechanism. They have no time. They all are in crowd but even though they are alone. No one is think for other. So petal is here metaphor for people or can say for crowd and bough but it black means like dead without life. People are working like live dead body so we can connect it here.
(5)The pool- by Hilda Dolittle
"Are you alive?
I touched you
you quiver trembling like a sea fish
I cover you with my net
What are you banded one?
Are you alive? This is the starting line. So when we talk about modern time people are living busy life. So here the title of poem 'Pool' we know that there is a water but it is not in motion or flowing like river. So it has limitation. People were trembling when they are controlled by power. They have no individuality.They are like a fish which is in net of fisherman.
(6) "Insouciance"- By Richard Aldington
"In and out of the dreary trenches
Trudging cheerily under the stars
I make for myself little poems
Delicate as a flock of dovesin
Thy fly away like white-winged Doves.
In this poem everyone has own interpretation and can find many images. 'Dreary trenches' is used as a metaphor for the ups and downs of life. Poet looks at the ups and downs of life and specially downfall of the humanity during the war. He is not willing to live in the atmosphere around him but he HAS to. Thus he becomes a small poem which shows the so-called brightness and his aggressiveness to be free from this hypocrite society.
(7)"Morning at the window"- T.S.Eliot
They are rattling breakfast plates in basement kitchens,
And along the trampled edges of the street
I am aware of the damp souls of housemaids
Sprouting despondently at area gates.
The brown waves of fog toss up to me
Twisted faces from the bottom of the street,
And tear from a passer-by with muddy skirts
An aimless smile that hovers in the air
And vanishes along the level of the roofs.
The poem has many symbols and metaphors as like rattling means vibreting its suggests the modern style of living life which we can see different than Romantics,They were given clear images by their poem while here poet give difficult images which we have to think deeply. we see the life of poor people by these images that how they live their whole day like 'sprouting despondently at area gates', 'Damp souls' , hopeless who have no any aim in life, 'fog' is very important image in which we can't see anything clearly same people can't see that what their aim of living life, other images like ' muddy skirt', 'aimless smile' give that spirit of nothingness of life of people.
(8) “The Red Wheelbarrow” by William Carlos Williams
so much depends
upon
a red wheel
barrow
glazed with rain
water
beside the white
chickens.
When we talk about the read borrow we can see it in given picture and it is about a rural area. But further poem consist line about beside chickens so they obviously say about the nature and farm. Because as we know that farming is very important. Or may be the wheel is metaphors of motion.
(9) “Anecdote to the Jar” by Wallace Stevens
I placed a jar in Tennessee,
And round it was, upon a hill.
It made the slovenly wilderness
Surround that hill.
The wilderness rose up to it,
And sprawled around, no longer wild.
The jar was round upon the ground
And tall and of a port in air.
It took dominion everywhere.
The jar was gray and bare.
It did not give of bird or bush,
Like nothing else in Tennessee.
This is a short poem by stevens. It is wonderful one. Poem telling about the past. Here poet takes Jar ,we can refer it with the poem Grecian Urn by Keats.Here jar is metaphor of Imagination ,culture, creativity or we can say Art. But this symbol of art means Jar is on hill. Now hill is symbol of nature. Nature means reality. So here quetion is which one is superior Art or nature. If anyone has art and creativity it s good but as Plato said it is imitation.so it has some limit. So first we think poet argue about that creativity or art is powerful. But poem take turn and we come to know that nature is reality and imagination is not able of what nature is.
(10) “I" by E.E Cummings
"A leaf falls with loneliness"
Here we can see that only one line of poem. So as we can see above poems they all are consist at least more than one line. Herethe title of poem is 'I' means about self. Leaf is a metaphor in this poem. And when we talk about the images we can say it is about the 'loneliness'.Different reader has different interpretations upon this poem. When we talk about leaf and loneliness it is related with 'fall'or unfortune.
Conculsion:
We know that there are many poetry era in English literature. They all have their own way to write ,describe and choosing the word is very important. When and where which word will give a apt meaning it is very hard to find. Through this literary work we came to know about the modern era and poet wrote a shot poem. One line poem from with many lines. So here I try to interpret some short modern poems.
